1st Quarter

January 1987

11th

A presentation to all members of the radio of our intention to attain medium wave broadcasting.

A lot of the presenters which were there that morning were sceptical of our plans. In the next twelve months the help and assistance shown only amounted to 5 presenters out of the 26

14th

Press release. The first release of many to the press, outlining our plans.

20th

The first phase of the poster campaign:-
Twenty nine shops in the local area are asked to display the distinctive red poster.

22nd

Bracknell news; prints the first details of the appeal

23rd

The first phase of the letters to the business community are posted: 10 major companies contacted.

29th

Ascot express article appears. Daler Rowney reply (No).

The launch of the appeal in January didn't stop the building work on the revamped library and reception area. There was a deadline to be met. The new library was due to be opened by the Windsor Lions on the 25th February. It was a disappointing start to the appeal ;with the bank account still set at zero, at the end of the first month.

February 1987

2nd

A phone call from Trevor Kensall indicating a substantial donation of £1000 from Bracknell Baptist church is more than likely.

This was the first indication that we were likely to receive major support.

4th

Patient donation of £10.

The patients who listened to the radio this year would have heard all about the appeal every hour, with the promo tape being played each evening.

5th

A local councillor who is in ward 3 listening to the service asks to speak to the appeal coordinator. Information which was passed to the secretary confirms the support of the application for a grant from the Windsor & Maidenhead council, will be accepted. He advises writing to the Ascot Fire brigade trust for additional support.

7th

9th

Ascot Fire brigade trust ring the chairman of the League of Friends to confirm a possible donation of £1000.

10th

Patient donation of £3.

Bracknell times article printed. This article was organized by Honeywell as one of their staff involvement in the community. A cheque of £100 was given to the station and the secretary had lunch at South Hill park.

23rd

League of Friends meeting: A phone call from a trustee of the Sunninghill fuel allotment trust suggests an appeal to their committee might be to our advantage.

25th

Official opening of the library renovations 8pm by the Windsor Lions and also a chance to ask for their continued support.

27th

Ascot express article. Donation from Boehringer of £25: Letter to SFAT delivered by hand.

28th

Patient donation of £5.

At last the appeal had really got off the ground. The information which was filtering through to us; convinced us that the target of £10'000 could be within our grasp.

Studio Renovations 1986/7

After the grand draw had concluded in September 1986. The station studio's were once again modified to accommodate the ever increasing record collection and to try and utilize as much space as possible.

The lions club from Windsor was contacted by a staff member and persuaded to donate £1000.The station secretary/engineer used the money to construct purpose built shelves for the records and provide an improved layout.Working most weekends until February 1987, when the new look studio's were opened by the lions.

2nd

Telephone call from Ascot fire brigade trust confirms donation of £1000: Confirmation letter from Windsor & Maidenhead council a grant of £6700 for the project.

3rd

A trip to Radio 210 and a broadcast on the Ron Allen show in the evening to promote the appeal. Bill bishop one of our Wednesday presenters who was a great friend of Ron Allen who was presenting the big band show at the time arranged for the manager and secretary to go along and talk about the Inductive loop system.

5th

£1000 received from Ascot Fire brigade trust.

6th

Ascot news article printed.

7th

Patient donations totalling £25:

Site meeting and survey with installation company.
All the preliminary work for the costing and information of the medium wave service had been conducted by letter. This was the important site meeting where a quotation on the actual installation would be made.

9th

Patient donation of £100.

10th

Donation from 3M of £50.

13th

First of two fundraising evenings at the old Windsor working men's club arranged by a patient from ward one. A dear lady who was keen to repay the wonderful treatment she had received in ward one arranged for these two evenings on consecutive Fridays. It was ironic that she couldn't listen to the radio during her stay because ward one's bed-head system didn't work.
Her assistance was prompted by the appeal poster.

16th

17th

Donation from Racal of £150.

20th

Ascot express front page covers the appeal :Second fund raising evening in old Windsor £194 being realized from the two events.

21st

Patient donation of £4.

25th

Ascot news front page article . Second appeal target is launched, a further £8000 required.
The momentum of the cash arriving and the possibility that we would not get another chance like this', prompted us to revise the target and try and replace the equipment , with some more reliable units.

29th

Donation from the General & Municipal Boilermakers union £20.

The question on our minds at the end of March; was not will we get the medium wave but when ?.
